Colourism is a hot topic in social circles these days, with plenty of ‘celebrities’ landing themselves in hot water because of their negative opinions on darker skinned people. Through the historical searches of social media platforms, these ‘celebrities’ have been found out to have said derogatory things about dark skinned people, specifically darker skinned women, and now they’re being chastised for it. America has been on a super black bullet train the past few months with Black Lives Matter, police shootings and Kanye West. Race has been a hot topic recently and the black social warriors are aiming their proverbial spears at anything that’s white, has dreadlocks and moves. Cultural appropriation is a sociological concept where members of the dominant culture adopts elements of the minority culture. The minority culture can view these actions by the dominant culture as disrespectful and can be seen as treating what has real cultural significance as fashion or toys. After a hard seventeen minute workout, I use the Sauna and Steam room to cool off from the intensity of the session. As usual, the steam room is out of order at my gym, which means everybody crams into the Sauna. Saunas are good for blood circulation, pain relief and relaxation so I understand the draw to it. There is a current trail of thought amongst young black men and women which makes many of them refer to themselves as Kings and Queens. From a young age , black children have been bombarded with stories, imagery and historical facts about slavery which has had a negative psychological effect. Whether its depicted as fact or fiction, to constantly endure the negative depictions of weak, troubled, violent, abused, tortured, struggling black people of the past and present will leak into the forefront of all people’s mind and add to stereotypes, reduce self esteem, cloud judgements and determine behaviour. He knelt during the national anthem at a football game, to draw attention to police brutality and the unfair treatment of minority people in America. This caused huge outrage throughout America with even the President having something to say on Twitter. Diving deep into the relationship between statistics and politics can be a slippery slope. In the UK, Labour have a lead across the country in terms of votes from ethnic minorities. The Conservatives however, are gaining ground, especially amongst the UK Asian population. The Conservatives are currently the favoured party for Sikh’s and Muslims. Black people make up 3-5% of the UK population so don’t really have a huge amount of influence and is probably why there isn’t much black representation in politics. The politicians do not need to pamper to the needs of black people because the black vote is not a significant demographic when it comes to politics.
