City of God the book written by Paulo Lins was adapted and turned into a harrowing tale about the harsh realities of childhood and crime in Rio De Janeiro. The Director Fernando Ferreira Meirelles grew up in a middle class family and studied Architecture in Sao Paulo, so he couldn’t be further removed from the gritty reality depicted in this overwhelming crime drama, thats why he brought in Katia Lund to assist as co-director. The choice to use mostly unknown actors added to the realism of slum life and brought spontaneity to the film. Improvisation, and strong emotional connection was important to portraying the definitive and often brutal choices characters were supposed to make. The film wasn’t shot in the real city of God because it was too dangerous due to the ongoing drug war. It’s a movie about hope, passion, violence and consequences, told in Scorsese-esque style and one which will stay with you for a long time after watching.

Musicians make a large proportion of their money through live shows and appearances. One of the problems I have with hip hop is that on too many occasions these shows end up in violence, often with dead or wounded fans. Hip hop and violence have a symbiotic relationship which isn’t as apparent in other cultures of music, so when this spills from just being a dark expressive art form into actual bullets piercing the skulls of teenagers we need to ask ourselves if this a case of life imitating art or vice versa. Either way, the end result is tragedy and dispersed despair.

Being funny is an art only a few can master, and we start to recognise this as from an early age. As you grow up and start to experience people and the environment the mind starts to absorb the complexities that fester in the background of life. Our capacity for good humour expands and we expect those who make us laugh to possess poignant perspectives and to surgically execute. Continue reading Bill Hicks, the genius comedian
