Learning about the horrors of the very recent past has contributed to a radical left wing set of ideologies that have crept into our educational institutions and flooded our media outlets. There is a segment of the population who believe strongly in identity politics and their right to constantly voice their opinion. Language is very important when considering the appropriate feeling about the history of black slavery from the perspective of a black person, because as a black man there is definitely strong feelings when the topic of slavery is brought up. For clear context in this particular article, when I refer to slavery, I am specifically talking about the transatlantic slave trade which started in the 16th Century. Tenacious, practical, intelligent and with a deep thirst for knowledge. Given all the real barriers to progression Carver had against him it is amazing how much greatness he was able to achieve. I hope the younger black generations can use Carver as a positive example of triumph over adversity. Excuses are for the apathetic and lazy.

There is a current trail of thought amongst young black men and women which makes many of them refer to themselves as Kings and Queens. From a young age , black children have been bombarded with stories, imagery and historical facts about slavery which has had a negative psychological effect. 12 Years a Slave & Django Unchained are Oscar winners, but which did you prefer?
I preferred Django Unchained to 12 years a slave, no contest. I’m one of those people who doesn’t think many films made in Hollywood deserve much intellectual merit. The depiction of slavery was accurate yes, and I’ve read enough about slavery to grasp that. Roots, Confessions of Nat Turner, and Beloved are all good reads. But to hear Nigger…this and Nigger that, watch horrid torturous scenes, seeing little black children treated like animals, (and once again), black women raped was demoralising. I kept imagining it was me getting whipped, beaten, shackled and spat on and it was a surreal feeling. Thanks Steve McQueen, your doing a wonderful job representing your own race.
